How to clean up after an oil spill

There are few worse examples of an environmental disaster than that of a crude oil spill. Even a tiny amount can have a devastating effect on the local wildlife and plants. In the first case, booms have deployed to try and contain the spill. Oil floats, but it can get down into the ocean floor or sea bed, poisoning aquatic plants and coral. Sea birds become confused and see it as a place to land. They get covered in oil, and as a result, they have to be washed. This detergent removes the natural water-repellent oils the birds have.
